CURRICULUM VITAE
 
Vassilis Anastassopoulos was born in Patras, Greece, in 1958. He received the B.Sc. degree in Physics in 1980 and his Ph.D. in Electronics in 1986, both from the University of Patras, Greece. His Ph.D. Thesis was on Digital Signal Processing and Delta Modulation Systems.
      From 1980 to 1985 he was employed as a Research Assistant in the Electronics Laboratory, University of Patras. From 1985 to 1987 he served in the Greek Army as a Research Scientist in Communications and Information Department (CID) of the Hellenic National Defence General Staff (HNDGS). From 1987 to 1989 he was a Lecturer in Electronics Laboratory, University of Patras, working on Signal and Image Processing Techniques. From 1989 to 1990 he worked as a Research Associate in the Department of Electrical Engineering, University of Toronto, on Non-linear Filters and Pattern Recognition and Classification Techniques. From 1990 to 1991 he worked as a Lecturer in Electronics Laboratory, University of Patras, Greece. He was promoted to Assistant Professor in the same University in 1992, to Associate Professor in 2000 and finally to Professor in 2005. He was the Head of Physics Department, University of Patras, for the biennium 2001-2003 and 2005-2007. From 2006 to 2010 he was the Vice Rector for Research Planning and Development at the University of Patras.
Since 1990 he has been in close co-operation with AUG Signals Ltd, a Canadian company, working on Radar Signal Detection, IR Image Processing and Data Fusion. He cooperated with this company as well as Laval University during his sabbatical in Canada (1994-1995). He is also in co-operation with other scientific-research groups worldwide. Additionally, he has been involved in various R&D programmes and scientific mobility activities.
He has been teaching, for 25 years, Basic Electronics, Digital Signal & Image Processing, Informatics and Programming. He is the author of four books used for University teaching purposes (in Greek). He has co-authored a book on Sigma-Delta Modulators published by Imperial College Press (Singapore, 2003).
His publication record contains over 80 journal and conference papers with over than 250 citations. His research interests are within the scope of Digital Signal Processing, Image Processing, Radar Signal Processing and Remote Sensing with emphasis in Multi-spectral, SAR and Infrared Imagery, Signal Detection, Pattern Recognition with emphasis in Handwritten Analysis, and Information Fusion including Image Fusion, Decision Fusion and Sensor Fusion Architectures. Lately, he was involved in image processing techniques for Astro-particle Physics.
He has served in the Scientific, Technical or Organizing committees of various International Conferences. He is reviewer in a number of scientific journals. He has been an Associate Editor in the IEEE Transactions on Circuits and Systems II. Currently, he is Associate Editor in the Pattern Recognition Journal. He is involved in ESA activities and he was appointed as Advisor in AFC ESA Committee. He is an IEEE member.
The following research projects are currently in progress under his coordination:
2005 - 2007: "THETIDA – System for Sea Monitoring and Surveillance using SAR Satellite data", funded by the Greek Secretariat of Research and Technology, under the Operational Program for Western Greece 2000-2006.
2005 - 2007: "ADHOCSYS - Wireless Ad-Hoc Broadband Monitoring System", funded by the European Commision under the FP6 Information Society Technologies programme.
2005 - 2008: "PENED 2003: System development of remote-sensed data processing, for automatic detection, classification and categorization of regions with environmental changes", funded by the Greek Secretariat of Research and Technology.
2005 - 2008: "Development of a system based on remote sensing data for automatic detection and classification of areas with environmental degradations", funded by the Greek Secretariat of Research and Technology, under the Greece-UK cooperation program.
